How to Prepare Your Furniture for Storage at BOXXS

How to Store Furniture Properly in a Boxxs Container

Whether you’re moving house, renovating a property, or simply trying to create space, storing your furniture in a Boxxs Self Storage container is a smart, secure solution. Our containers are clean, dry, and brand new — designed for peace of mind. But the condition your furniture is in when it goes into storage plays a big role in how well it comes out. Proper preparation protects your items from damage and helps you use your storage space more efficiently. Here’s how to do it right.

Why Furniture Preparation Matters

Even in high-quality, weatherproof containers like ours, taking time to prepare your furniture makes a significant difference. Proper preparation prevents scratches, mould, moisture damage, and pest attraction. It also allows for safer stacking and better use of space. Think of it like preparing for a long-haul journey — your furniture deserves the same level of care.

Choosing the Right Container Size

Boxxs offers both 10-foot and 20-foot containers, suitable for everything from small flats to large house moves. Picking the right size is essential. You want enough space not just to fit your furniture, but to allow for access, airflow, and safe organisation. A 10-foot container is ideal for studio apartments, seasonal items, or compact storage needs. A 20-foot container is more suitable for full house moves, business storage, or larger renovation projects. If you’re unsure, our team is happy to help — send us a list or photos of your items and we’ll recommend the best fit.

Clean Before You Store

Before placing anything into storage, give your furniture a proper clean. Dust, dirt, and stains can cause long-term damage and attract pests. Use suitable cleaners for wood, metal, plastic, or leather surfaces. Vacuum upholstered items and treat leather with conditioner. Once cleaned, ensure everything is completely dry before packing. Trapped moisture, even in a dry container, can lead to mould and unpleasant odours.

Disassemble Large Items Where Possible

Bulky items such as bed frames, tables, and wardrobes should be disassembled where practical. Doing so saves space, makes the items easier to wrap and transport, and reduces the chance of damage. Store screws and fittings in a labelled bag and tape it to the relevant piece so you don’t lose anything. A little organisation at this stage saves a lot of hassle later.

Wrap Furniture for Protection

Wrapping your furniture properly is one of the most overlooked steps — but it makes all the difference. Use bubble wrap for glass, mirrors, and fragile finishes. Furniture blankets or moving pads are ideal for wooden and metal items. For sofas, mattresses, and upholstered pieces, use breathable covers rather than plastic, which traps moisture. Secure everything with rope or stretch wrap, but avoid placing tape directly on furniture surfaces. If you’re not sure which wrapping materials are best, just ask. Our team is always happy to advise.

Pack and Stack with Care

Heavier items should go on the bottom with lighter or more delicate items stacked on top. Leave a small gap between the furniture and the container walls to allow airflow. If possible, place cardboard sheets or pallets underneath to keep items off the floor. Think ahead when packing — if there are things you may need access to soon, place them near the door of the container for easy reach.

A Note on Vehicle Storage

It’s not just furniture that we store. One of our customers even keeps a classic Aston Martin DB5 in a Boxxs container during the off-season. Like every item placed in our units, the car is protected from the elements in a clean, dry, and secure environment. Whether you’re storing something sentimental or strictly practical, we provide the same level of care and professionalism.
