Behind the Scenes

The Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS Self Storage is Scotland’s boldest container art event

This exhibition didn’t happen overnight. But some of the art did.

Bringing The Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS to life meant turning a working self storage site into something completely unexpected – an open-air gallery made entirely of steel.

Over several days, the artist repainted his most iconic works directly onto our containers, working in unpredictable weather, full view of the public, and under the constant hum of traffic and power tools. No gallery lights. No white walls. Just spray cans, scaffold towers, and paint-stained gloves.

Some pieces went up in hours. Others took days. Each one was signed by the artist on site.

What it really looked like

  1. The Aftermath
A pile of well-used stencils, scattered at the base of the freshly finished container. These were used to build up layers of detail – the shapes, shadows, and lettering – now visible across the steel.

  2. Tools of the Trade
Cartons filled with spray paint, with open cans on standby. This was The Bear’s palette, industrial, precise, and far from traditional.

  3. Lined Up and Ready
Stencils pressed against the side of a bare container, waiting to be brought to life. A moment just before colour, frozen in steel and tension.

We documented the process from start to finish so you can experience what went into making this possible – the mess, the materials, and the moments you’d never see once the paint dries.

The Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS in Linlithgow is on Sunday 6th July. Come and see what those stencils became.
