How the Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS Came to Life

The Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS isn’t just Scotland’s boldest container art gallery – it’s the result of a bold, hands-on creative process that unfolded in real time.

Turning a working self storage site into a large-scale, open-air street art exhibition meant transforming industrial containers into canvases. Over several days, The Rebel Bear repainted some of his most iconic works directly onto our storage units – on location, in unpredictable weather, with the public watching it all unfold.

There were no gallery lights. No white walls. Just scaffolding, spray cans, and steel.

Some murals came together in just hours. Others took days. Each piece in the Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS was signed by the artist on site – making this not just an exhibition, but a living performance in its own right.

What it really looked like

  1. The Aftermath
A pile of well-used stencils, scattered at the base of the freshly finished container. These were used to build up layers of detail – the shapes, shadows, and lettering – now visible across the steel.
  2. Tools of the Trade
Cartons filled with spray paint, with open cans on standby. This was The Bear’s palette, industrial, precise, and far from traditional.
  3. Lined Up and Ready
Stencils pressed against the side of a bare container, waiting to be brought to life. A moment just before colour, frozen in steel and tension.

We documented the process from start to finish so you can experience what went into making this possible – the mess, the materials, and the moments you’d never see once the paint dries.

The Rebel Bear Exhibition at BOXXS in Linlithgow is now a permanent display. Come and see what those stencils became.
