The Rebel Bear Cost of Living

- First painted in Edinburgh in 2022, highlighting inflation and living costs.

The Rebel Bear Cost of Living was first painted in 2022 on a large wall in the Muirhouse housing estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh. A red zigzag chart cuts sharply upwards across the bricks, symbolising the soaring inflation and rising cost of living faced by millions. Clinging to the line is a lone figure – a working person weighed down by a shopping bag, barely keeping pace.

The Rebel Bear captioned the piece: “An official graph of the recent increase in inflation and cost of living.”

The Rebel Bear Cost of Living is now repainted at scale for the BOXXS Linlithgow exhibition at Mill Road Industrial Estate. The artwork resonates as a bold economic statement – visually distilling a crisis into something immediate, human, and unignorable.
